The Powder Bank of Daytona Beach

One of the most famous beaches in the world is Daytona Beach on the east coast of Florida.  The beaches on the east coast of Florida are unique because they have hard-packed sand as well as soft sand, so it is the best of both worlds.  The beaches on the west coast of Florida have only soft sand, so there’s nowhere to ride a bike or even go for a jog.

You will see joggers on the west coast of Florida, but the running lane is very small and not ideal.  If you ever go to Clearwater Beach, Saint Pete Beach, or Sarasota Beach you will notice the soft sand going all the way to the water line.  This is a really beautiful sight and very comfortable for a family beach day, but it just limits the activities that you can do like bike riding and jogging.

My brother-in-law, who is a solar panel contractor in the Daytona area, jogs 5 miles every morning on Daytona Beach.  He also runs marathons and other competitive races, and always says that the workout he gets by jogging on the beach each morning is what prepares him for those marathon events.  And he runs that 5 miles every morning come rain or shine, and whether it’s cold or hot.  He always says that watching that sun come over the horizon when jogging the beach is what gives his day energy.

This is what makes Daytona Beach so special, and many beaches like it on the East Coast.  The powder bank of Daytona Beach is packed very hard from the waterline to about 50 feet up the beach.  And then after that point you have the soft sand up to the hotels, resorts, or dunes.

This, in my opinion, is the ideal beach because it gives you the soft sand that you love to sink your toes in, as well as the hard sand for activities.

This is a great place for many family activities:

  • Bike rides
  • Jogging
  • Playing frisbee golf
  • Yoga
  • Family badminton
  • Corn hole with the wood boards and bean bags
  • Bocce
  • and more

My family used to vacation each summer in Daytona Beach for a week.  It was the highlight of our summer, and so many great memories.  We always stayed at Perry’s Duck Inn right on the beach, and I still have photos of my sister and me playing by the pool.  We used to go for long walks on the beach in the morning, sometimes more than 5 miles.  We used to love to watch the sun creep over the ocean horizon.  It was always such a breathtaking sight.

These are some of the best childhood memories that I have, and I still like to drive by Perry’s when I am in Daytona just to reminisce.  My father has since passed so those are very special memories to me and my family.  We did have so many great days on Daytona Beach.

Another great advantage of the hard-packed beach sand is that it is perfect for building sand castles and sand sculptures.  It is nearly impossible to build great sand castles with the soft sand that you have on many beaches.  If you travel to the east coast beaches of Florida in the summertime you’ll often see some amazing sand sculptures.  The people who build these are truly artists and it’s amazing that they donate their time to create such amazing works of art for all beachgoers to enjoy!

Here is a great video of one of these sand sculptures:

Another nice thing about Daytona Beach is that the water is generally pretty warm for about 6 to 7 months a year.  So even in late October you can still do a beach weekend and have a lot of fun on the beach.  And even when it is too cold to enjoy the water, the beach is still the most beautiful place on the earth in my opinion.

So next time you travel to Florida make sure you check out the world’s most famous beach, Daytona Beach!
